Front Door Painting Services
Original Timber Front Door Preparation
Victorian and Edwardian terraces on High Wycombe’s central conservation streets have original timber front doors in an architecturally scrutinised streetscape. Multiple paint layers have often obscured the moulding profiles and caused the door to bind in the frame.
We strip accumulated paint at the moulding edges to restore the shadow line, back-prime all bare timber, and apply exterior-grade topcoat in the client’s chosen colour.
Kerb-Appeal Front Door Refresh
A freshly painted front door is one of the highest-return kerb-appeal investments on any property. Sellers often start with the front door and discover it looks significantly better than the surrounding exterior once it is done.
For a wider exterior programme once the door is done, see our exterior painting page. For the full pre-sale house preparation programme, see our house painting page.
Hardwood and Timber Panel Doors
Hardwood front doors on executive detached homes in Tylers Green and Bourne End-edge are typically oiled or varnished rather than painted. Switching from a varnished or oiled finish to a painted finish requires full surface preparation to remove any existing oil contamination.
Hardwood doors that have been recently oiled need a solvent wash and a specialist adhesion primer before any paint product can be applied. We include this in the quote rather than discovering it once work has started.
Two-Colour Finishes and Side-Light Surrounds
Front doors with side-lights and fanlight surrounds require a planned colour sequence. The door, the surround frame, the side-light frames, and the wall reveals adjacent to the porch are each a separate surface.
Conservation-area properties may have restrictions on external colour changes. For period property doors where the substrate science is more complex, see our period property painting page.
Exterior Gloss Versus Flexible Finish
Traditional oil-based gloss is the most durable option on a solid-timber front door. It is hard-wearing, resists impact damage, and produces a high-sheen finish that suits period doors. It dries slowly and requires careful weather planning.
Flexible exterior eggshell or satin finishes are appropriate on doors that move more seasonally. We advise on the correct finish type at the site visit based on the door orientation, timber species, and condition.

Here’s How It Works
1. Site visit and door assessment
We inspect the door, frame, and surround. We note the paint build-up depth, moulding condition, timber species, existing finish type, and door orientation. We confirm the preparation method and product specification at this stage.
2. Surface preparation
Accumulated paint is stripped or sanded at moulding edges to restore the profile. Bare timber sections are back-primed with a wood primer appropriate to the species. The frame and surround are cleaned and prepared. Hardware is removed or masked.
3. Priming
All bare or stripped sections receive the correct primer. Hardwood sections that have been oiled receive a specialist adhesion primer. Softwood sections receive a standard wood primer. The primer is allowed to cure fully before any topcoat.
4. Topcoat application
One or two topcoats depending on the existing colour and the new colour choice. Dark colours over light or bare timber require two topcoats as standard. Each coat is applied in appropriate conditions: not in direct sun on a south-facing elevation, not below 8 degrees Celsius.
5. Final inspection
The door is inspected in good light and all edges are checked for coverage. Hardware is refitted or unmasked. We leave the door propped open for the initial curing period and advise on the time before the door can be closed fully.
Front Door Painting Costs in High Wycombe
Prices below are estimates only. Every property is different. Call 01494 326400 for a precise quote.
Front door painting costs in the High Wycombe catchment reflect the variation in door size, paint build-up depth, moulding complexity, and whether the frame, surround, and side-lights are included in the scope.
What shapes the cost on a Wycombe project:

Paint build-up and moulding work
A conservation-street Victorian terrace front door with heavy accumulated paint and an obscured shadow line takes longer to prepare than a recently installed hardwood door. Moulding profile restoration adds preparation time.
Scope of work
A door-only refresh is the minimum scope. Including the frame, step nosing, side-light frames, and adjacent reveals increases the programme and the materials.
Finish type and colour change
A like-for-like colour refresh in gloss over a sound surface is quicker than a dark-to-light colour change that requires sealing the existing colour before the new topcoat.
Typical ranges:
Original timber front door (Victorian conservation-street terrace), stripped and recoated in oil-based gloss including frame: £260 to £440.
Hardwood door on executive detached (Tylers Green), adhesion-primed and painted from oiled or varnished surface, door and frame: £320 to £520.
Two-colour front door with side-lights (Tylers Green or Hazlemere premium detached), door in one colour, surround and side-lights in another, full scope: £480 to £780.
