Plasterboard Painting Services
Mist-Coat Application on New Plasterboard
New plasterboard has a highly porous, chalky paper face that absorbs undiluted emulsion unevenly. The result is a patchy, sheen-variable finish that no quantity of topcoats will fully resolve.
Your decorator applies a correctly diluted mist coat as the sealing first stage. The mist coat dries fully before any finish coats are applied. This is the correct approach on all new plasterboard, including extension and loft conversion rooms in Downley and Sands.
Dot-and-Dab Plasterboard Joint Control
Dot-and-dab fixed plasterboard has joints at the board edges that absorb paint at a different rate to the face of the board. Without correct preparation, board joints appear as sheen variation in raking light.
We tape and fill all joints with the appropriate jointing compound, prime the filled areas to equalise absorption, and then apply the mist coat across the whole surface before finishing.
Extension and Loft Conversion Rooms
New-build extensions and loft conversions in HP12 and HP13 are a regular part of our plasterboard painting work. These rooms often mix plasterboard surfaces with adjacent plastered or previously decorated surfaces, requiring a careful approach to equalise absorption across the whole room.
For the wider interior painting service once plasterboard surfaces are prepared, see our interior painting page.
Ceiling Painting on Plasterboard
Plasterboard ceilings in new extension rooms require the same mist-coat approach as walls. The surface is sealed, filled at joints where needed, and finished with a dedicated ceiling emulsion.
Finishing a plasterboard ceiling correctly avoids the flashing and stripe effects that appear when light rakes across an insufficiently sealed surface. For dedicated ceiling painting across all room types, see our ceiling painting page.
Bathroom Plasterboard
Moisture-resistant plasterboard in bathrooms and utility rooms still has a paper face that needs sealing with a mist coat before any finish is applied. Your decorator uses moisture-resistant primers and appropriate paints in these areas to suit the substrate.

Here’s How It Works
1. Site visit and surface assessment
Your decorator inspects the plasterboard surfaces, notes the board type, fixing method, joint condition, and any nail pops or tape lines. Your decorator confirms the preparation method, product specification, and number of coats required at this stage.
2. Joint filling and surface preparation
All board joints are taped and filled where needed. Nail pops are set and filled. The surface is lightly sanded to remove any nibs or high spots. Dust is vacuumed before any coat is applied.
3. Mist coat application
A correctly diluted mist coat is applied across all new plasterboard surfaces. This seals the porous paper face and equalises the surface absorption. The mist coat is allowed to dry fully, typically overnight, before the next stage.
4. Finish coat application
One or two finish coats of the specified paint are applied after the mist coat. A minimum of two finish coats is standard on all new plasterboard. Darker colours or high-sheen finishes may require an additional coat for full coverage.
5. Final inspection
The finished surfaces are inspected in good light, including raking light from windows, to check for any joint show-through or sheen variation. Any areas that need attention are addressed before we leave the site.
Plasterboard Painting Costs in High Wycombe
Prices below are estimates only. Every property is different. Call 01494 326400 for a precise quote.
Plasterboard painting costs in High Wycombe reflect the size of the room, the number of surfaces involved, whether the boards are dot-and-dab or timber-framed, and the finish specified.
What shapes the cost on a Wycombe plasterboard painting project:

Surface preparation and jointing
New plasterboard with unfilled joints, nail pops, or tape lines takes longer to prepare than a correctly boarded and finished surface. We include all preparation in the quote.
Number of coats
All new plasterboard requires a mist coat plus at least two finish coats. Rooms with darker colours or specific sheen requirements may need an additional coat.
Scope across room surfaces
A room with plasterboard on all four walls plus the ceiling is a larger scope than a single feature wall added during a structural alteration. We price by the full room scope.
Typical ranges:
Single new plasterboard extension room (walls and ceiling, mist coat plus two finish coats): £280 to £480.
Dot-and-dab plasterboard room requiring full joint tape and fill before mist coat: £340 to £560.
Loft conversion room with mixed plasterboard and existing surfaces: £320 to £520.
