Staircase Renovation Services
Full Strip-and-Restore Programme
A staircase renovation removes every accumulated paint layer, restores the profile and condition of the timber, and applies a new finish from a properly prepared bare surface. A repaint simply adds another coat over existing layers.
We treat every staircase element in sequence: spindles first, then handrail, then newel posts, then string board, then treads. Each element requires its own strip technique and finish product.
Chemical Strip on Turned Spindles
Turned spindles on Victorian and Edwardian staircases are joined to the handrail and string board at peg joints, dry-fitted with no adhesive. Heat strip on original softwood spindles risks softening the wood at the peg joint, causing the spindle to loosen.
We specify chemical strip on original turned spindles as standard. Strip-back is completed mechanically with a scraper once the chemical has worked.
Handrail and Newel Post Restoration
Handrails on period staircases accumulate significant paint depth over decades of repainting. Strip-back to bare timber restores both the profile and the surface. We check each newel post for sound fixing before stripping.
For the full period property substrate context where stairs sit within a conservation-area property, see our period property painting page.
Tread Restoration and Floor Paint
Pine treads on stripped-back Victorian and Edwardian staircases can be finished in hardwearing floor paint or left clear-coated. Floor paint on stair treads must be a hardwearing product rated for foot traffic; standard emulsions or eggshells are not appropriate.
Where the staircase is the main focal point of a hallway renovation, the wider hallway decoration context is covered on our interior painting page.
Conservation-Area and Listed-Building Staircases
Staircases in listed buildings or in conservation-area properties must be renovated in accordance with the character of the original fabric. Restoration of original elements is the correct approach.
We work to a restoration brief on listed-building staircases. For the wider hallway and staircase programme in a whole-house renovation, see our house painting page.

Here’s How It Works
1. Site visit and staircase assessment
We inspect every element: spindle condition, peg joint stability, tread condition, newel post fixing, and accumulated paint depth. We note which elements are appropriate for chemical strip, heat strip, or a combination, and advise on any structural issues.
2. Spindle and balustrade strip
Chemical strip is applied to all turned spindles and left to work according to product dwell time. Strip-back is completed mechanically once the paint has softened. The spindle profile is revealed and any paint residue in the turning grooves is removed by hand.
3. Handrail, newel, and string board strip
Heat strip is used on flat sections of the handrail, newel post, and string board where peg joints are not at risk. Chemical strip is used at any section adjacent to a peg joint. Once stripped, bare timber is sanded smooth and any surface defects are filled.
4. Priming
Bare timber gets a specialist wood primer throughout. Spindle joints and any repaired sections get additional primer coats. Treads get a hardwearing floor primer before any topcoat.
5. Paint application and final inspection
Spindles and balustrade are finished in the specified topcoat. Treads are finished in hardwearing floor paint. We walk through every element with the homeowner before leaving and complete any touch-ups on site.
Staircase Renovation Costs in High Wycombe
Prices below are estimates only. Every property is different. Call 01494 326400 for a precise quote.
Staircase renovation costs reflect the number of spindles, the extent of paint build-up, the tread condition, and whether the programme involves chemical or heat strip or a combination of both.
What shapes the cost on a Wycombe project:

Spindle count
A Victorian terrace in High Wycombe town centre typically has between 18 and 28 turned spindles on a straight staircase. Spindle count is the biggest single driver of labour time on a staircase renovation.
Paint build-up depth
Staircases with many decades of paint accumulation take longer to strip than those with two or three coats. Deep paint on a moulded spindle profile requires more detailed strip-back.
Tread finish
Painting treads in floor paint adds to the scope. Clear-coating oak treads in a penetrating oil finish is a different process with different material costs.
Typical ranges:
Full staircase strip-and-restore (Edwardian semi in Tylers Green), turned spindles, newel posts, and pine treads in hardwearing floor paint: £2,000 to £3,200.
Victorian terrace staircase restoration (High Wycombe town centre conservation streets), straight staircase with turned spindles and painted pine treads: £1,800 to £2,800.
Full staircase renovation with landing balustrade (period property in West Wycombe or Lane End), extended balustrade covering landing as well as stair run: £2,800 to £4,200.
